HA! You just brought back one of my childhood memories. I made a crude sling and tried to use it. My best attempt found the rock 90 degrees from where I intended to hit, right through our living room window!!
I actually got pretty good with a sling as a boy. Best shot ever was knocking a woodpecker off the top of a streetlight pole. I used venetian blind chord and an old shoe tongue for the pouch.
The range on a sling was better than on a rubber-powered slingshot, so when we had wars, I had the advantage over distance, though not in speed. (To keep from killing each other, we used dirt clods.)
