Allowing convicts to lift weights as a means of reward or to dissipate stress is extremely controversial. This ARTICLE provides some framework and the opinions that follow are quite illuminating.

Tough topic. I don’t think lifting weight is rehabilitative for a criminal, and, as they point out, roughly 70% will be convicted of another felony within three years of release.

The dedicated prisoner will do bodyweight stuff in his cell or where he can. The weight pile is, really, probably a bad idea, as is promoting any kind of combatives sports.

I think the idea of providing them with videogames is a good one. Also, more junk food. I’d rather have a ex-con after me who’s been eating doritos and spending 4 hours a day playing Halo than one who’s been eating tuna, and hitting the weight pile.
