Happy birthday, man. I hope I'm in half as good shape as you when I hit that birthday.

Hell, I wish I were in as half as good shape as you are now.

And yeah - best shape I was ever in, was when I was a teenager working in a nursery, hauling bags of mulch and topsoil out to people's cars. Of course, I was a teenager, but the work outside definitely helped.

Happy Birthday man.
As usual some of your stuff I agree with, some of it I don't, but every bit of it makes me THINK.
I did manuel labor for years and I have to say I was in all around better shape than any of my "fitness" friends.

Happy Bday,
most of that sounds great to me. Unfortunately I see the mass populace heading more the direction of pilates and swiss balls. I think heavy lifting will be looked at as self destructive and a disease to be cured, it'll be lumped in with adrenaline addiction. You'll see guys like me on Ricki Lake with my wife crying about how I left her with the baby for two hours so I could train stones and how I keep 500lbs in sandbags in the garage.....

i gotta split hairs on your point about functional fitness. i find that people who aren't laborers tend to romanticize the benefits of labor a bit. in your fence posts example, after you set enough fence posts, you figure out how to do it without being too much work. when you've gotta fence in 40 acres a day, you figure out how to be more efficient at it or you burn out and get hurt.

happy 50th, best wishes for long life and vigorous health!
