Excellent post...as usual.
It all comes down to "When the going gets tough..." Do you..
A) Dig in?
B) Go out for some smokes and not come back?

It is the adversity that makes one strong. Not racing on a rat-wheel.

Podunk

I love this post! You've really touched on something that is rarely addressed in our 'comfort culture'. You've also 'hit the nail on the head' regarding 'fitness fanaticism'. I'm enthusiastic as anyone, but I have to agree that a lot of folks out there are not healthy in the sense that their lives are unbalanced. Abs & buns of steel at the expense of strong relationships is vanity at it
s worst, IMO--

Thanks for the great post! I love this blog!

AMEN!!

Humans are social animals and we evolved and thrived because of group (tribal) cohesion. The real strength that tough people posses transcends themselves and usually involves the genuine care and responsibility that goes into being a husband, wife and father.

Being tough is a lot more valuable than being "gym strong" and overcoming adversity in training and in life are the hallmarks of someone that understands that life must be dealt with on life's terms. We can prepare and plan until we're blue in the face, but that is no guarantee that some event out of our control isn't going to totally F%$# it up for us. Then what? Do we fold and make excuses as to why it isn't fair, or is too hard or whatever, or do we just accept that sometimes life sucks and put our heads down and get it done? I know the answer to that question from my own perspective.

Good post Tom, thanks for telling it like it is.

Tom,
very very good writing. Thanks for it.

Minds, like bodies, will often fall into a pimpled, ill-conditioned state from mere excess of comfort.

Charles Dickens
